LESSON 4

"IS THE LORD AMONG US OR NOT"

MOSES, THE DELIVERER

After the death of Joseph, a new king arose. The new king, fearing the Hebrew people would overthrow him, put the people to building great cities, setting taskmasters over them. But the more he afflicted them, the more they multiplied. The new pharoah ordered the Hebrew midwives to kill all male babies at birth, but they refused to kill for they feared God. "Therefore God dealt well with the midwives" (Exodus 1:8-22).

During this time Moses was born. His mother put him adrift on the river in an ark of bulrushes when she no longer could hide him, and he was found by Pharoah's daughter who raised him as her son. Moses grew up in a palace, and we can already see the mighty hand of God shaping this young man's future. When Moses was grown he came to the aid of a Hebrew brother and slew an Egyptian, which angered Pharoah and Moses fled to Midian, where he met and married a woman named Ziporrah (Exodus 2:21). One day while tending the flock of his father-in-law, Jethro, the angel of the Lord appeared to Moses in a "burning bush," saying:

"I have surely seen the affliction of my people which are in Egypt and I have heard their cry by reason of their taskmasters; for I KNOW THEIR SORROWS, " "And I am come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land unto a good land and a large, unto a land t7owing with milk and honey" (Exodus 3:5,8).

A J-0-B FOR MOSES

God told Moses that he wanted to send him unto Pharoah to bring forth the "Israelites" out of Egypt. Moses doubted his ability saying, "Who am I that I should go unto Pharoah." God assured Moses saying "I will be with thee." God said he would smite Egypt with "wonders" and Pharoah would let them go. You will not go empty handed said God, but you will take jewels, silver, gold and apparel from the Egyptians (Exodus 3:10-22). Moses was afraid the Egyptians wouldn't believe God sent him. God gave him a rod that he could perform many wonders with, that "they may believe that the Lord God hath appeared unto thee" (Exodus 4:3-5). Moses said unto the Lord, "O my Lord, I am not eloquent, I am slow of speech" (Exodus 4:10). God was angered at Moses for his lack of faith and sent Moses' brother Aaron with him to be his mouth (Exodus 4:14-20).

THE PLAGUES OF GOD

Moses and Aaron went before Pharoah telling him all the God of heaven had said and Pharoah said, "Who is the Lord, that I should obey his voice to let Israel go? I know not the Lord, neither will I let Israel go" (Exodus 5:2). Moses cast the rod of God upon the ground and it became a serpent. Pharoah's magicians, by some trick were able to do this also, but the rod of God swallowed the other serpents up (Exodus 7:10-12). Pharoah's heart was hardened against God so God sent 10 plagues upon the land of Egypt before Pharoah let the Hebrews go.

lot Plague - Moses held the rod over the waters of Egypt and they turned to blood. It lasted 7 days and the Egyptians dug around the river for drinking water (Exodus 7:20-24).

2nd Plague - Frogs were everywhere. Frogs in the "beds" and "frogs. in the bread." God allowed Pharoah's magicians to bring forth frogs also (Exodus 8:6-7). They sure didn't need any more frogs.

3rd Plague - Frogs are bad, but what about lice? They were as the "dust of the land" (Exodus 8:17). Pharoah's magician's could not do this and said "this is the finger of God" (Exodus 8:19).

4th Plague - Flies were the next plague on Egypt. God said "I will sever in that day the land of Goshen, in which my people dwell, that no swarms of flies shall be there; to the end that thou mayest know that 1 am the Lord in the midst of the earth" (Exodus 8:22-23).

5th Plague - All the cattle died in Egypt but not the cattle of Israel (Hebrews) (Exodus 9:4). 6th Plague - Boils, large sores on man and beast. That thou mayest "know there is none like me in all the earth" (Exodus 9:10-14).

7th Plague - God rained hail mingled with fire on the Egyptians (none in Goshen). Pharoah's servants who obeyed God and came into their houses and brought their cattle in were spared (Exodus 9:19-26).

8th Plague - Locusts covered the face of the earth so that the land was darkened. Pharoah's servants said "let the people go, knowest thou not yet that Egypt is destroyed?" (Exodus 10:7). 9th Plague - Thick Darkness was in Egypt, but Israel had light in their dwellings (Exodus 10:22-23). It was so dark.. ."They saw not one another, neither rose any from his place for 3 days."

10th Plague - The death of the firstborn, the last terrible plague. The Hebrews were spared as they obeyed God. - "And all the firstborn in the land of Egypt shall die" (Exodus 11:5).

"But against any of the children of Israel shall not a dog move his tongue, against

man or beast: that ye may know how the Lord doth put a difference between the Egyptians and Israel" (Exodus 11:7).

ISRAEL DEPARTS FROM EGYPT

Before Israel departed from Egypt, God began a feast called the "Passover." It was to be a memorial of the time God passed over his people with the angel of death and spared them in the death of the " Firstborn. " They were to kill a lamb for, each house, a male, without blemish, of the first year and were to "take of the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses, wherein they shall sat it. They were told to eat it; "with your loins girded, your shoes on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and ye shall eat it in haste: it is the Lord's Passover" (Exodus 12:3-11).

"The blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are.  And when I see the blood, I will pass over you and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you" (Exodus 12:13).

Christ is called the Passover of Christians (I Corinthians 5:7). The Israelites were to roast the meat only and eat it along with unleavened bread and bitter herbs (Exodus 12:8). They were to enter the house where the "blood was". When they reached the promised land they were to "keep this service" and when their children asked about it they were to say It is the sacrifice of the Lord's Passover" (Exodus 12:26-27).

With the death of Pharoah's son, Pharoah let the Israelites leave Egypt. They spoiled the Egyptians, taking great wealth with them as God had said. The number of Israelite (Hebrew) people that left Egypt was 600,000 on foot, (besides children) their sojourning in Egypt being 430 years; (Exodus 12:35-40) with 400 years in bondage. Even though the way through the Philistines land was nearer, lest they be afraid, God led them by way of the Red Sea. An opportunity for another "Wondrous Work"; "and the Lord went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light" (Exodus 13:17-21).

PHAROAH PURSUES

Pharoah changed his mind and all the chariots of Egypt pursued Israel, about 600 chariots. As Pharoah drew near them, they were afraid and cried out unto the Lord and complained to Moses saying he had brought them in the wilderness to die" (Exodus 14:14-12). Moses said to Israel, "Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord, which he will shew to you today" (Exodus 14:13).

"The Lord shall fight for you and ye shall hold your peace" (Exodus 14:14).

Moses told the people to "go forward" and he lifted up the rod in his hand over the sea and divided it (Exodus 14:15-16). The pillar moved behind Israel, and it came between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel. It was dark to the Egyptians but it "gave light by night" to Israel (Exodus 14:20). "Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the Lord caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all that night, and made the sea dry land, and the waters divided" (Exodus 12:21).

The Egyptians pursued and God "troubled the host of the Egyptians" and "took off their chariot wheels, that they drave them heavily" and the lord fought for them against the Egyptians (Exodus 14:24-25). Moses stretched out his hand over the sea and it closed. Pharoah and all his army were killed (Exodus 15:19). The children of Israel "walked upon dry land in the midst of the sea" (Exodus 14:29). "Israel saw that great work which the Lord did upon the Egyptians: and the people feared the Lord, and believed the Lord, and his servant Moses" (Exodus 14:31).

The people sang and were happy to be away from their cruel bondage saying "The Lord is my strength," and "The Lord is a man of war," with the "blast of thy nostrils the waters were gathered together" (Exodus 15:2-8). The praises soon stopped and after 3 days the people "murmured" for the water they found was "bitter water" and the people had not learned to trust God. God told Moses to cast a tree into the waters and it became sweet, a miracle, another Wondrous Work (Exodus 15:24-25). God provided bread from heaven called manna (Exodus 16:2-8) and quails. On the 6th day the people were to gather enough manna for the 7th day which was to be a sabbath and a day of rest. Israel ate manna 40 years until they reached the borders of Canaan. A pot of manna was kept for generations as a memorial that God fed Israel (Exodus 16:25-35). The sabbath was given only to Israel (Exodus 31:13-18) and not for "Christians" to keep today (compare Colossians 2:14-27).

"WRITTEN LAW" for ISRAEL (Mosaic Age)

Before reaching Canaan, the Israelites camped near Mt. Sinai and Moses went upon the mountain to receive the first written law for Israel. It was written by the "finger of God" on two tables of stone (Exodus 20). When Moses returned, he found Israel engaged in sin and worshiping a golden calf they had urged Aaron to make for them during the 40 days Moses was on the mountain. Moses was angry and broke the tables of stone. He ground the golden calf into powder and mixed it with water and made the people drink it for their sin; 23,000 Israelites were killed that day for idolatry (Exodus 32:15-20).

Moses returned to the mountain for 40 more days and received two more tables of stone. God spoke other laws and commandments to his people and Moses "wrote all the words of the Lord." It was read to the people and called the "book of the covenant" (Exodus 24:4-7). It contained laws on how to treat your fellowman, health laws, and laws on government; everything they needed to worship and serve God. They governed Israel some 1500 years until a new covenant was given through Christ which "Christians" live under today. Portions of God's law for Israel are found in Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy.
